3 Freelance Truths You Need To Know
1. BEING SELF MOTIVATED IS NOT OPTIONAL
Being self motivated is the name of the game. There is no one around reminding you about deadlines, follow-ups and everything else you need to do to make your business work for you. It’s just you. And, try as you might, those emails just won’t send themselves.
2. YOU CAN’ T BE A JACK OF ALL TRADES…AT FIRST
Make your mark deep, not wide. You cannot be a food, travel, style and beauty blogger right out of the gate. The first thing you have to do is establish yourself as an expert. Someone people should listen to. Someone people should make time to visit on the internet. Start small. Zero in on something and master it.
When your pipes burst you call a plumber because pipes are her expertise. When she gets there and builds your trust, she may tell you she also does electric work. But, only after she shows you that she's a pro at plumbing. The same concept applies to your business. Get in, build trust and then expand your reach.
3. YOU ARE NOT YOUR OWN BOSS
Most people flee the cube because they're tired of taking direction from people. Talk to anyone looking to take the plunge and they'll likely say they want to be their own boss. Here's the thing... I'm NOT my own boss. Everyone who contracts me is my boss for the duration of the project. Every client I have is my boss.
They set the expectations for the job and I meet (and exceed) them. I create opportunities for myself to work with and for people. I don't have 1 boss, I have 465 bosses who all want what they want when they want it. That's just the way it is ;)
