Life...As Told By Dr. Seuss
Oh, The Places You'll Go is seriously my favorite kids book. And, if we're honest, that book is written for the grownups. Every time I open it, another life lesson pops out in the form of a Dr. Seuss quote. Keep reading to check out every thing you need to know about life as told by Dr. Seuss.
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU!
"You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go."
"With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet, you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street."
YOU WILL NEVER BE SURE...OF ANYTHING
Life is hard. Adulting should come with directions. There are some things you do and some places you go and you don't know why. Dr. Seuss already knew that was going to happen :)
"You will come to a place where the streets are not marked. Some windows are lighted. But mostly they're darked."
"Do you dare to stay out? Do you dare to go in?"
SOMETIMES YOU'LL GO IT ALONE
"I'm afraid that some times you'll play lonely games too. Games you can't win 'cause you'll play against you."
"All Alone! Whether you like it or not, Alone will be something you'll be quite a lot. And when you're alone, there's a very good chance you'll meet things that scare you right out of your pants."
YOU WILL WIN!
Dr. Seuss tells us that we're going to win. There will be times in our lives when we will soar above the crowd and be in first place.
"You'll be on your way up! You'll be seeing great sights! You'll joint he high fliers who soar to high heights."
"You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed. You'll pass the whole gang and you'll take the lead."
YOU WILL LOSE!
He also breaks the harsh news that what goes up must come down. In order for one to win, someone else must lose. Sometimes, the loser will be us. Sometimes we'll fall short.
"I'm sorry to say so but, sadly, it's true that bangs-ups and Hang-ups can happen to you."
YOU'LL NEED TO GET OVER IT!
Dr. Seuss acknowledges that things will get us down. He knows that some of our failures will leave us devastated. He doesn't make light of the fact that we'll have some recovering to do before we bounce back. He also let's us know that we'll have to push forward and move along.
"And when you're in a Slump, you're not in for much fun. Un-slumping yourself is not easily done."
WAITING FOR WHAT YOU WANT IS USELESS
Not only did Dr. Seuss tell us that waiting is absolutely useless, he actually named the place where people go to wait. The way he describes the Waiting Place is a thing of nightmares. Whenever I feel myself sitting around waiting for something to happen, I remind myself that I don't want to go to the waiting place.
"...waiting for the fish bite or waiting for the wind to fly a kite or waiting around for Friday night or waiting, perhaps, for Uncle Jake or a pot to boil, or a Better Break or a string of pearls , or a pair of pants or a wig with curls or Another Chance. Everyone is just waiting."
THE ONLY WAY OUT IS THROUGH
"But on you will go though the weather be foul. On you will go though the enemies prowl."
"On and on you will hike. And I know you'll hike far and face up to your problems whatever they are."
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST...POSITIVE SELF TALK
"And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98% and 3/4 percent guaranteed) KID YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!"
"Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So...get on your way!"
