Focus On The Work
I was running stairs in the park and a major key hit me like a ton of bricks. Stay focused on the work.
Usually when I run these stairs, I look up at how far I have to go. BIG mistake. Looking up instantly serves up a side of overwhelm. I’m immediately reminded of the work I have yet to do. The top somehow feels farther than when I first started the climb.
But today, I made an effort to only look down at the stairs. I didn't focus on how far I’d gone or how far I had to go. I just focused on each step as I took it. I kept my eyes on the work I was doing in the moment, not the work I had yet to do.
This is how we should look at our goals. Big goals come with big anxiety. Instead of looking ahead and focusing on how far you are from where you want to be, focus on the work that you need to do right now. Do you need a plan? Sure! But, do you need to constantly measure how close you are to accomplishing the goal? Nope.
Keep track & check things off as you complete them but don’t look up from the work that needs to be done right now. Just do it.
I ran those stairs 3 times today. Each time, I kept my head down and only focused on taking another step. It was hard but I got it done. Because the obstacle wasn't more important than the goal. Don’t take your eyes off the prize.
“Obstacles are what we see when we take our eyes off the prize”
